Northwest Biotherapeutics Awards Kidney Cancer Target Manufacturing Contract

Meriden, CT, October 16, 2000 - Northwest Biotherapeutics, Inc. announced today that it has selected Protein Sciences Corporation, Meriden, Connecticut to develop a high yield expression vector for production of a proprietary kidney cancer-specific protein as a component of a new treatment for renal cell carcinoma. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"This represents an important next step in extending our company's proprietary dendritic cell-based immunotherapy, DCVax™, to other cancers with limited treatment options", states Alton L. Boynton, Ph.D., Northwest Biotherapeutics' Executive Vice President and Chief Science Officer. "Protein Sciences will apply GeneXpress®, its program for rapidly developing cost-effective clinical quality recombinant protein expression systems, to facilitate the production of material needed to prepare our DCVax™ kidney cancer vaccine for human clinical trials."DCVax™ is currently being evaluated as a treatment for late-stage prostate cancer at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where patients are continuing to be recruited. Northwest Biotherapeutics is also continuing pre-clinical evaluation of DCVax™ as a treatment for non-small cell lung cancer and for glioblastoma, a lethal form of brain cancer.

Protein Sciences Corporation is a privately held company founded in 1983 that employs its GeneXpress® program to address the needs of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies by reducing the time, risk and cost of moving product candidates into clinical trials.
