The Baculovirus Expression Vector System (BEVS), invented in 1982 by Max Summers and Gale Smith, is universally recognized as a powerful and versatile tool for producing large recombinant proteins.
Protein Sciences' BEVS manufacturing process begins when genetically engineered baculoviruses are injected into bioreactors containing proprietary insect cells. The engineered baculoviruses infect the cells and "program" the cells to manufacture a desired protein. The "programmed" cells are supplied with nutrients and oxygen for two to three days during which the desired protein is expressed at the maximum yield possible during a single production run. The cells are then harvested and the protein is extracted and purified using proprietary downstream processing and purification techniques.
