Avian influenza In many countries, in recent years there have been outbreaks of avian influenza that not only result in sickness and death for millions of poultry but also regularly require the slaughter of all infected and potentially infected poultry in the affected area to prevent transmission to other areas. North American influenza outbreaks include the H5N1 outbreak in Mexico in 1995 and the 1983-84 H5N2 outbreak in Pennsylvania. Most famously, 1.5 million chickens, ducks, quails and geese were slaughtered in Hong Kong to contain the 1997 outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza that for the first time proved transmissible to humans. Of the 18 people infected, 6 died. PSC was the only company capable of producing H5N1 influenza vaccine since the standard production method in eggs was not feasible with this influenza strain. This vaccine provided 100% protection to chickens against infection in USDA testing. Click Here for more information.
